The Dempsey Center, a beacon of hope and support for cancer patients and their families, is embarking on an exciting new chapter. Founded in 2008 by actor Patrick Dempsey and his family, the center was born from personal experience with cancer, inspired by Patrick's mother's numerous battles. Over the years, the Dempsey Center has evolved into a sanctuary offering a holistic approach to cancer care, providing free services such as counseling, integrative therapies, and wellness programs.
With locations in Lewiston and South Portland, Maine, the Dempsey Center has touched countless lives through its mission to make life better for those managing the impact of cancer. Now, the center is expanding its reach by establishing a new facility at the state-of-the-art Medical and Research Campus at Rock Row in Westbrook.
Why Rock Row?

The Rock Row Medical and Research Campus, developed by Waterstone Properties, is an immersive, experiential destination designed to foster health and wellness. It will feature two buildings, including a 179,365 square foot Medical and Research Center and a 20,000 square foot free standing Health Services Building, set to be completed by early 2025. This campus is designed with patients in mind, featuring free parking, proximity to nature trails, and a healing garden—all elements that support the Dempsey Center’s focus on holistic care.
Creating a Healing Space
The new Dempsey Center at Rock Row will incorporate biophilic design principles, bringing natural elements into the indoor environment to enhance the healing process. "We're excited to use a neutral coastal feel in our design, leveraging the proximity to Portland's beautiful coastline," Valentino says. "Our aim is to create a space that feels like home, where the color palette, materials, and even a fireplace contribute to a calming and supportive atmosphere."
This thoughtful design extends to the practical aspects of care. The new center will offer an expanded array of services in a single location, ensuring that cancer patients and their families have access to comprehensive support. "We will continue to offer our core services—counseling, integrative therapies, and comfort and wellbeing programs—in a setting that supports our clients' emotional and physical needs," Valentino adds.
A Community of Care
The Dempsey Center's move to Rock Row is not just about space; it's about creating a community. "The idea of what Rock Row means for the state is so compelling to us," Valentino notes. "It's about providing a full spectrum of care in one location, with access to other nutrition providers, healthy food options, and outdoor activities.”
The Medical and Research Center allows for collaboration with other medical providers, fostering a community that supports patients in every aspect of their journey. Established tenants include New England Cancer Specialists, Rayus Radiology, Plastic and Hand, and Saco Bay Physical Therapy, among others. This collaborative environment will enhance the Dempsey Center’s ability to deliver integrative care that addresses the whole person.
